Updated: Sep 23, 2023

A small town is known for its charm and slow-paced life. A small village local to Santa Comba Dao is known as the birthplace of one of the most famous Portuguese, Antonio de Oliveira Salazar in Vimieiro (10 minutes away from the city of Santa Comba Dao.) • He was born on April 28, 1889, and died in Lisbon, on July 27, 1970. He was a Portuguese nationalist dictator who headed several ministries, was president of the Council of Ministers of the dictatorial government of the Estado Novo, and professor of Political Economy, Finance Science, and Social Economy at University of Coimbra @30 minutes away from Santa Comba Dao. In 1940, he was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Oxford He dominated Portuguese politics for 40 years.

There are 3 updated grocery stores in town. In front of the Intermarche is a washer and dryer for public use.

There

is a public library in an old building that was renovated to equip the library. The staff is very friendly and helpful. You can borrow 3 books at s time. They host art displays and author visits. You can purchase items on display. You can read all the local newspapers and magazines too. The building is worth seeing.

Walking around town is relaxing. There are some shops on N2 that goes through Santa Comba Dao. There are stores in the back of town and a feira on Wednesdays. The turismo is small and does not give out information other than a map of Santa Comba dao.

In the summer, there is an outdoor pool but it is very cold. You must wear a bathing cap. You can pay to swim for a day. Rooms are cheap to rent. Look for signs that say "pensao". This is similar to a bed and breakfast but less pricey. There is a Galp gas station with lots of parking and ample space for cleaning the car windows. This Galp has a tire fill. The bakeries in town are open during mornings and until @ 3pm. they serve pastries, cakes, coffee and wine. Look for pasteleiria. If you want to purchase jewelry, there is a Tax free shop on the main street, Moreira & Moreira on Avenue of Humberto Delgado Street. The telephone number is 232 888473. If you shop here, you pay the tax and get it back after you complete the Global Blue forms and get it stamped at the airport. You need a passport and photo identification. There is a $1 Dollar/ Euro store a few stores down from the Jeweler. Everything is $1 Euro. You can get some good buys in here.

The Pharmacy next to the $1 Euro store is complete. They have all medications on hand. The Pharmacist administered our Covid test in the back office which allowed us to fly back to United States (October 2022). The cost was $25.00 / person and we had the results in 30 minutes. The Pharmacist completed the forms we needed to submit at the airport.
