Name of Pedestrian Bridge

516 bridge PORTUGAL- Central Portugal Arouca is the name of the town The 516 Arouca bridge is the largest pedestrian suspension bridge in Europe and is located in Arouca, in the Aveiro district, Portugal @ 1 hour south of Porto. With 516 meters in length and an elevation of 175 meters, it connects the banks of the Paiva River. Crossing the bridge, you will have a breathtaking view over Garganta do Paiva and Cascata das Aguieiras, both geosites of the UNESCO Arouca Geopark territory.


Where is the pedestrian Bridge

516 Arouca Bridge is located in Arouca, next to the famous Passadiços do Paiva. I walked across the bridge slowly while my legs were shaking and I took a few deep breaths. My husband walked across the galvanized steel bridge with ease.

Hearing the river flowing beneath us was exciting.


Why is the name 516 Bridge?

The poles from mountain to mountain stretching across the river is 516 meters long.

Cost to Walk the Bridge

VERY IMPORTANT

YOU M U S T purchase tickets via the internet and reserve a time to cross the bridge. The guided trips in English and Portuguese are every hour and last 40 minutes. Tours can start on either side of the bridge.

Tickets (adult €12, under-17s €10) for the 516 Arouca bridge

Tickets can be bought from 516arouca.pt.

From October to May, Clube do Paiva offers rafting trips for €80 (minimum age 8 years); from June to September, canoeing (€40), canyoning (€70), and river trekking (€40)

Quinta do Pomar Maior (doubles from €75, just outside the town of Arouca, offers beautifully designed accommodations and traditional breakfasts.

How to Dress for the Trip

You cannot wear heels. Bring a sweater, it gets windy.


What to Bring for the Trip

Bring water, there is nowhere to purchase anything. No bathrooms either. The bridge is extremely remote. We drove around on very small side roads for hours.


How long does it take to cross the bridge?

The guided tour is a 15-minute walk across and then walk back to the same side you started on. Tours begin on each side.

Is Arouca Portugal worth the visit?

Arouca is a city in Aveiro District, Portugal. (Northwest) It has many popular attractions, including Passadicos do Paiva, CIGC- Centro de Interpretacao Geologica de Canelas-Arouca, and Arouca Geopark, making it well worth a visit.
