DEMENTIA I Can't Make This Stuff Up- Stories About Caring for My Dad

A Funny Story to Share about my Dad

Story #1

My Dad is officially an escape artist or Houdini reincarnated. He likes to take short naps throughout the day which keeps him up at night while we are sleeping. He wanders the house and sneaks everything into his pants pockets and hides my things in his bedroom drawers. He roams the house with his dog. He is able to open the sliding door and let his dog out. Late one night, he opened the sliding door and let the dog out. The dog didn’t return quickly. My Dad went outside searching for his dog. He couldn’t find his way back inside but the dog did. My husband and I were sleeping during my Dad’s late-night outing. The weather was wet and cold. I looked at the camera monitor in my bedroom and noticed that my Dad was not in his bed. We called the police immediately and we all searched for him. We located him a few hours later in the woods.

The next day, my husband and son added a metal bar to the sliding door and a bolt to the base of the door so it couldn’t be opened easily. They added security chimes to the top of the door with the ringer in my bedroom. My husband added locks to all exterior doors as well as security door chimes that ring in our bedroom.

We thought we could sleep calmly at night with cameras and locks on all the doors.

After a few quiet nights of sleep and then we were woken up at 3:00 am. By a loud chime that sounded like a doorbell. My Dad was able to remove the metal bar, unlock the door and even remove the screw from the base of the frame. He went outside with his dog without his sneakers on. However, this time the door chimes rang in my bedroom and my husband and I woke up quickly. We ran downstairs as fast as we could. We saw the sliding door open. We located my Dad and called him back into the house. He put his head down and walked slowly into the house. He looked like a teenager who was caught sneaking out of the house. We told him he was not in trouble but he cannot go outside without us. We told him it is dark and cold out. He looked up and gave us a small smile and walked back into his bedroom. He thanked us for caring for him and then said, “Get out of my bedroom”.

Back to sleep, we went after we secured all the doors again.

Story # 2

Late one wintry afternoon, my Dad and I stretched out on our reclining chairs as we quietly napped by the flaming fire. As I dozed off I noticed my new purple sneakers were on my feet. I snuggled with my blanket and slept for about 30 minutes. As I slowly woke up, I glanced over at my Dad’s feet and saw my new, shiny purple sneakers on his feet. His New Balance white sneakers were under my chair. After a few minutes of refocusing my eyes, I said,'' Dad, why are you wearing my new purple sneakers?”. He said,'' His girlfriend bought them for him and she just left.” Now, I can’t take them off of him or he will become agitated. I have to wait until he goes to sleep, then sneak into his bedroom and steal my own sneakers back.
