SUPER FESTA JULY 2023 IN TOMAR, PORTUGAL

This Festa only occurs every 4 years. Festa of the Trays or Festa Dos Tabuleiros

The Festa dos Tabuleiros takes place every 4 years and the next one will take place in July 2023. Don't miss this unique event!

The blessing of the trays/ headpieces/ boards, the decorated streets, the colorful bedspreads placed in the windows, and the throwing of paper flowers on the procession of trays, made up of hundreds of girls who carry the trays on their heads, is an unforgettable event.

The Procession of the Tabuleiros , announced by bagpipers and firefighters in uniform, is commemorated by the Pendão do Espírito Santo (Holy Spirit) and the three Crowns of Emperors and Kings. with the participation of the girls/ young women who carry the trays on their heads, ending with the bread, meat, and wine carts, pulled by the symbolic sacrifice ox, with ringing horns and hanging ribbons of brilliant colors. This helps liven up the crowd.

Girls carrying the trays wear a long white dress with a red sash across the chest. They are supported by boys / young men who also have formal attire, a white shirt, dark pants, a black cap, and a red tie. The tray, which must be the height of the girl, is made of 30 loaves of bread. The decoration is completed with paper flowers, vegetables, and wheat ears. The Carnaval ranks among the world’s most unforgettable parties. Not as well-known as the famous Carnaval in Brazil but close to it This festival is celebrated by different communities in different ways with the one in Lisbon’s Parque Nacoes being the biggest. The street parades along with the theatrical performances fill the area, costumes, floats, and masks are also a part of this festival. During the Carnaval in Algarve, they sail the traditional Portuguese boats by the coastline to celebrate the festival. This is very colorful.

AMARES EASTER - PROCESSION CROSSING THE HOMEM RIVER Monday after Easter This is one of the biggest parties in Amares. The Crossing of the Homem River by a procession makes this village very proud and attracts thousands to the banks of the river. May Porto, Lisbon, Coimbra

The first Queima das Fitas in Porto took place in 1920 when medical students at the University of Porto organized a party they called the 'Pasta Party', in which fifth-year finalists passed their briefcases to fourth-year students. Over time this party changed its name and became a tradition and today there is a 'Queima das Fitas' in each university, normally in the month of May. This used to be only for college students but now it's worth a visit to watch the tradition and the party.

BRAGANÇA FESTIVAL OF SENHORA DA RIBEIRA (OUR LADY OF RIBEIRA) Our Lady of the Stream. The number of miracles attributed to the image of the Blessed Virgin, found was confirmed by incredible cures led to a large devotion to this site. Passed down for generations, the story goes, this temple was small and humble when Queen Saint Isabel passed through it on her way to Trancoso, to marry King D. Dinis. It was brought to her attention by the fact that so many people were there. Curious, she wanted to see what they were looking at so she went to see the statue. After understanding and hearing the stories of cures and miracles, she placed The area under Her protection. The devotion continues, as well as the chapel which attracts a lot of devotees every year, to admire the image of Our Lady of Ribeira.

PILGRIMAGE OF SANTIAGO The pilgrimage of Santiago, an ancient tradition, marks Mondim de Basto and the top of Our Lady of Grace (Nossa Senhora da Graça) as the epicenter of the entire region. The request for annual promises continues to be a great motivation for the pilgrims to visit this festival. Travelers arrive at night on foot, hearing the music and the admirable singing of the women of Basto. At dawn, they climb the sacred hill to attend religious and sacred celebrations. Through ancient routes and roads, they return home, singing, dancing, and partying along the way. This celebration is related to the old routes of the pilgrims who went on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.
