Dementia Day Care at a facility vs in-home care with a certified Dementia home aide- Memory Care

Updated: Apr 17, 2023

What are the benefits of daycare for a Dementia loved one?

For people with dementia, adult day centers provide a chance to be social and to participate in staffed activities such as music and exercise programs. The person with dementia will need time to adjust to the experience of going to the center. Some people may resist going at first, but they often look forward to the visit after several weeks of attending, meeting people, and joining in activities.

Daycare for dementia

Find the right center for you and your loved one.

When choosing an adult day center, arrange a meeting with the staff and ask these questions:

  • What are the hours, fees, and services? (Be sure to ask about the minimum attendance requirements and the notification policy for absences.)

  • What types of programs are offered and when?

  • Are people with dementia separated from other participants or included in general activities?

  • Will the center evaluate the person's needs? How will this evaluation be accomplished?

  • Is staff trained in dementia issues?

  • What types of health care professionals are on staff? How do you screen them?

  • How are emergency situations handled?

  • How do you ensure the safety of the participants?

  • Is transportation available?

  • How many patients can be at the center at one time?

  • Is the center 'private pay' or covered under insurance?

  • Do I need to send a change of clothes?

  • Can I call and check on my dad?

Adult Daycare is finally open for therapy.

Dad is enjoying the time to get out.

My dad is attending a local daycare. The facility is a social adult day care center, that is both upbeat and upscale. The Social Adult Day Care Center is a place where those 55 and over, come to enjoy their day. The daycare offers full meals, exercise, in a social setting.

God blessed me with amazing parents.

My days are full. I miss my mom.

I am thankful I was graced by her strength and courage.

Some moments are challenging, exhausting, and heartfelt.

This journey is educational and entertaining. My dad makes me smile.

My family has rallied together to surround my dad with love and support.

My mom would be so proud of us.

Heading to

My little brother is picking him up later.

God Bless Us!

update

Dad needed a few weeks break from adult day care. We added 2 days of home aide 4 hours per day. We tried to be consistent with trips to the store, visit great grandchildren, shopping, Church, etc.

update January 2022

I babysit my grandchildren on Tuesday’s and Thursdays every week. My brother picks my dad up on Tuesdays to take him to lunch. Dad fell on the concrete steps and scraped his forehead, finger, and knee. My brother feels horrible about it. I told him to stay calm. The cuts are on the surface. He didn’t do anything wrong. My dad gets shaky at times. I don’t want my brother to be discouraged. he didn’t neglect my dad. My dad fell. I hope my brother continues to pick my dad up and take him out. There is an amazing bond between my dad and my brother.

update March 2022

My dad wanted to stop going to daycare, We regularly attend Church. We see the same people there. One man asked my dad why he stopped attending daycare. I didn’t realize they both went to the same facility. I am going to attempt to send him 2x / a week next week to try it again.

My dad is back at daycare every Tuesday for the men's club group. 2023

Memory care facilities long term

Memory care is similar to assisted living in that it’s considered to be noninstitutional care, while nursing homes are institutional. While memory care programs are often co-located within assisted living facilities, there are some distinct differences in the environment, staffing and recreational programming offered within memory care units.
