Dementia Caregiver Bird-Watching Activity
Bird feeders are a fun way to rest and relax. Get a bird feeder (squirrel-proof).
Hang the feeder near a window or on a post near the window. Keep the feeder filled.
We sit still as possible near the window and watch the birds. In our area, we see Cardinals, Bluebirds, Woodpeckers, Morning Doves, Sparrows, and Goldfinches.
It is extremely relaxing to watch the birds come and go. Painting birdhouses are not only relaxing and therapeutic but can also keep a person’s focus for long periods of time. Having a purpose for the activity increases the benefits of the project and helps increase the probability the patient will participate. Creating something useful that is intended to be a home for another living creature is rewarding and helps provide the dementia patient with a sense of purpose.
!x/week, my dad and his aide fill the birdfeeders. Over the years, we have made several wooden birdhouses. We watch the birds eat and nest.

FISH TANKS
Setting up a small starter fish tank can help keep your loved one busy by cleaning the tank, feeding the fish, putting the light on and off, and admiring the fish.
