" Dr. Richard Furman helps readers understand dementia and Alzheimer's and shows them how to make three powerful lifestyle changes that can help decrease the probability of developing this disease. He explains how eating the right foods, exercising, and sustaining an ideal weight can dramatically reduce the likelihood of developing dementia in the first place, and even how it can slow the progression of the disease in someone who has already received a diagnosis." book review amazon

Beating the Dementia Monster: How I stopped the advance of cognitive impairment from Alzheimer's disease Paperback – July 16, 2020
In 2015 Dave Brown experienced significant problems with his thinking and memory. He did poorly on cognitive tests, and he experienced episodes in which he couldn't remember his phone number or zip code of 30 years. He had to stop driving, and he became confused when crossing the street. His doctors sadly informed him that he had mild cognitive impairment (MCI) due to Alzheimer's disease. The disease was advancing rapidly. Dave blended the advice he got from his medical care team with his detailed research on the science of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. He developed what he calls The Dementia Toolkit; an approach to generating the physiological changes in the body that can slow, stop and even reverse the advance of the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. In this book, he details each piece of the toolkit and explains what science understands about them. Three years later he was excelling on cognitive tests, driving safely, and functioning normally. This book has lots of medical terms that can be difficult to comprehend. I purchased this book and plan on adding it to my home library. I hope to implement some of the ideas from his toolkit into my daily activities. Remember there is no cure for dementia. I don't want people to think this is a cure to memory loss.

Copyrighted 40 years ago, this book has practical everyday ideas to improve your ability to care for your loved one. This book shares the experience of a dementia patient in a 24-hour period. To the dementia patient, one day feels like 36 hours of turmoil, racing thoughts, confusion, and uncertainty.
This paperback book contains new information on a range of topics including home care aides, helpful apps to use on your phone, and preventative techniques to utilize with your loved one. One of the most useful sections in this book is the practical advice for avoiding caregiver burnout. I have been caring for my dad for 2 years in my home. I have hired home health aides to stay with my dad so I can babysit my grandchildren and go to doctor's appointments. Learning not to feel guilty when it comes to my own health and the things I want to do did not come easy. It took me months to realize that my life and health are important too. If I am sick, I cannot care for my dad properly.

The End of Alzheimer's: The First Program to Prevent and Reverse Cognitive Decline Kindle Edition
by Dale Bredesen (Author) Format: Kindle Edition
4 1/2 stars
In this hopeful book, Dale Bredesen, MD, offers a chance to anyone looking to prevent and possibly reverse Alzheimer's Disease, memory loss, and cognitive decline. Indicating that Alz Disease is not one condition, as it is currently treated, but three separate diseases. The End of Alzheimer’s outlines 36 metabolic factors (micronutrients, hormone levels, sleep) that can trigger "downsizing" in the brain. The protocol shows us how to rebalance these factors using lifestyle modifications like taking B12, eliminating gluten, or improving oral hygiene. Ten participants were part of the first study utilizing the program and changing lifestyle activities. 9 out of the 10 had significant improvement in memory and cognitive abilities within 3-6 months of using this program. I believe more studies are needed to verify the findings.
I hope this book doesn't give false hope to loved ones who are struggling to care for family members. Lifestyle changes can be difficult to implement especially when someone is suffering from dementia.
